Dealing with Lust
Jan 17th, 2008 by Ben
I’m talking about Tech Lust. It’s insidious.
Phillip Jensen spoke this week at KYLC on various -isms, one of which was materialism (I’m missing tomorrow’s talk on consumerism, which is a real shame). He pointed out how thoroughly materialist (in both the philosophical and economic senses) our society is. It’s so much a part of our culture, we simply cannot see it. We breathe it in with every breath.
The MacBook Air was released this week, and although I have no interest in it at all, other than from a tech news perspective, at various times I’ve been hit by the Tech Lust bug. The iPhone release in Australia is going to stretch me, I assure you.
Here’s an interesting article on how to deal with Tech Lust from Get Rich Slowly. Consistent with what Phillip was saying earlier in the week, secular commentators are now beginning to notice and comment on the emptiness (and destructiveness) of insatiable materialism. We can only pray that it becomes more and more mainstream to deny yourself the latest and greatest for the sake of your own contentment.
It’ll certainly make it easier for those of us who want to be less worldly.
