★ Why work is easy and parenting is harder
May 8th, 2008 by Sally
If you’ve read anything much on this site, you will know how much we love our girl and what a blessing she is to us.
That being said, I’ve been wondering why two days paid work a week seems easy and rewarding and the days as “all mum” seem much more exhausting and leave me feeling a bit flat.
No doubt there are lots of things influencing these feelings. One thing: I know what I’m doing at work. I’ve been doing it for almost 7 years. I am only 1.5 years on in the parenting role, and the “job description” keeps changing! I’m not going to be too hard on myself.
As I lay in bed the other night pondering this phenomenon, as one does, another element came to mind. At work:
- there is a clearly written company mission statement which I agree with
- the company sets specific and limited objectives to achieve the mission statement
- each year I set specific and limited objectives to match the company’s
- my performance as a worker is evaluated often and feedback is given
- I get to give feedback on my working conditions and influence them
- there are clear protocols to follow for almost all work tasks.
These kind of structures probably bore most people to tears. But I have the kind of personality that loves order and definition. My workplace caters for this type of personality very well. But at home, it’s a different story.
I wonder if applying and adapting some similar structures at home might change how I feel? Maybe so.
I thought I might share my journey: starting with a motherhood (parenthood) mission statement. Stay tuned: I just need to liaise with the Head of Operations and my Managing Director.
