Diary of a novice gardener – from the beginning
Apr 18th, 2009 by Sally
When we moved to Newtown about 18 months ago, I was thrilled that we now had some DIRT*. I am not a gardener, but I love to cook and I love fresh veggies and herbs. So, we – with help from mum and dad – duly ripped out the bougainvillea and some ugly fern-y type thing, chucked on some manure and planted some seedlings. Thus began the great mini-kitchen garden experiment. I blogged about it here. I’ve since added a few more pots and been learning more about the organic gardening thing.

I think a kitchen garden – even a mini version like ours – is really valuable on many levels (environmental, educational, physical and spiritual) – especially for mums! So, by way of encouragement I hope to write a few more posts on our experience. And hopefully I’ll get some tips from some more experienced gardeners along the way!
*ok, so probably less than 2 squ metres, but some dirt none the less.
Ben. Good stuff. I have the joy of a 4 plot vegetable garden which has given me a truck load of fun and vegies this summer. I’ll be keen to hear how you get on.
I must say I’m a bit jealous of your climate. Down here in Tas I’m still waiting for some of my tomatoes to ripen (they were planted in October!!!!)
Hey, Al.
It was posted by my wife, but thanks for the comment. I noticed your cooking blog the other day; Sally’d be keen to read that, I reckon.
Would love any tips for winter vegies!
