Diary of a novice gardener – Bokashi lessons
May 9th, 2009 by Sally
So – I’ve mentioned the Bokashi bucket before. It’s a pretty simple process – but it’s not idiot proof. Here’s some things we’ve learnt:
1. Anything that smells “off” means that you’ve done it wrong. You can bury the off smelling waste in the garden BUT it will attract pests (like flies).
2. Fly larvae (I won’t use the m-word) can get INTO the buried Bokashi waste. This is gross. BUT…
3. Apparently, certain fly larvae are the best and most efficient composters. Ever. If you can get past the yuck factor – you will go from waste resembling food to soil in 1-2 weeks.
4. When said larvae run out of food, the LEAVE the soil and go elsewhere… like the porch, under pots and in the house. This is also gross. But the birds love them.
bokatshi bin is a really good way to compost way, and I am very happy with this, i recommended it to everybody!
