Accordance

After ripping into Accordance maps the other day, I had a detailed to-and-fro with one of the developers there, Roy, who listened very carefully to my comments, pointed out a couple of misunderstandings on my part, and was altogether very willing to hear my feedback and work it into potential future plans.

This morning, David Lang, [...]

ESV Study Bible

I’ve blogged briefly about this before; the release date is now a little closer and I’m looking forward to seeing this thing.

Here’s a video from Crossway about the study Bible. It’s hosted by Tullian Tchividjian. That’s a helluva name.

Here’s the ESV Study Bible page.

Codex Sinaiticus

Nerds rejoice!

Codex Sinaiticus, the equal oldest and best complete New Testament text is now available online (thanks, Di, for the link).

Along with Codex Vaticanus, it is considered the best complete NT we have, dating to the fourth century. I saw Codex Sinaiticus (designated with the Hebrew letter aleph, א) in 2001 when I visited [...]

Isaiah and God’s Character

There a long and proud tradition of taking short passages from the Old Testament, getting your footing right and then wrenching them from their context, to make them mean something they were never intended to mean.

This seems to have undermined the confidence of some who, as a reaction against this, don’t feel as comfortable letting [...]

Jonah Series

Still writing, but done soon. Really enjoying it.

I’ll report on the sermons at a later stage.

Old Testament Minor Prophets Mnemonic

I can never remember the order of the ‘minor’ prophets in the Old Testament. And looking a book of the Bible up using the contents page, whilst at theological college, is not the best look ; ).

Here’s a mnemonic I’m finding helpful as I preach through Jonah (and thus have a good reason to finally [...]

The Psalms & Biblical Poetry

I’m doing an essay on Psalms over the next couple of months, which hopefully I’ll get to posting about at some stage.

In the mean time, I’d like to recommend two books. The first is the sequel to one of the best books on the Bible I’ve ever read. The first one was The Art of [...]

Wow, They Weren’t Kidding

Accordance 8.0 is up. That was sooner than expected.

There’re no huge changes to the UI, but it certainly runs faster. It loads in about a fifth the time it used to, which is very welcome.

There’s a video available, demonstrating some of the new features in v8. (23MB | ~7min).

VeggieTales and Biblical Theology

Some guy named Russell D. Moore has written a great critique of the complete lack of Jesus in VeggieTales:

They take biblical stories, and biblical characters, but they mine the narrative for abstractions–timeless moral truths that can help children to be kinder, gentler, and more honest. There’s almost nothing in any episode that isn’t true. But [...]

Red Letter is Hot

A gush of comment today on red letter Bibles (words of Christ in red) and ‘red letter Christians’.

Carson has commented on the phenomenon of ‘red letter Christians’, who claim that,

they take the words of Jesus especially seriously… and end up being more concerned than are other Christians for the poor, the hungry, and those [...]

ESV Study Bible

I’ve never been a fan of study Bibles. They’ve always seemed to de-emphasise the (biblical) text, and I sat in too many Bible studies as a teenager in which someone would pipe up with, “Well, this says that…” prompting a barely audible sigh from the group leader. Thankfully, the church tradition Sally and I have [...]

Bible Translation Text Stats

We’ve talked a bit recently about Bibles and design, and now from the ESV Bible Blog we get an article on text stats from the various English translations. Here’s a graph of Words per Sentence vs. Total Words: These stats are taken from Amazon, rather than from doing an analysis of the texts themselves, [...]
