Some guy named Russell D. Moore has written a great critique of the complete lack of Jesus in VeggieTales:
They take biblical stories, and biblical characters, but they mine the narrative for abstractions–timeless moral truths that can help children to be kinder, gentler, and more honest. There’s almost nothing in any episode that isn’t true. But [...]

A gush of comment today on red letter Bibles (words of Christ in red) and ‘red letter Christians’.
Carson has commented on the phenomenon of ‘red letter Christians’, who claim that,
they take the words of Jesus especially seriously… and end up being more concerned than are other Christians for the poor, the hungry, and those [...]

I’ve never been a fan of study Bibles. They’ve always seemed to de-emphasise the (biblical) text, and I sat in too many Bible studies as a teenager in which someone would pipe up with, “Well, this says that…” prompting a barely audible sigh from the group leader.
Thankfully, the church tradition Sally and I have [...]

We’ve talked a bit recently about Bibles and design, and now from the ESV Bible Blog we get an article on text stats from the various English translations.
Here’s a graph of Words per Sentence vs. Total Words:
These stats are taken from Amazon, rather than from doing an analysis of the texts themselves, [...]

I didn’t realise this kind of thing existed, but it doesn’t really surprise me. A bloke called J. Mark Bertrand (guess where he’s from) has a fascinating blog about Bibles, specifically, Bible design and the various publishers who produce quality Bibles.
And by ‘quality’, I mean, ‘outrageously high quality’.
Here’s a great quote:
Nothing I have [...]

There are some great preaching resources out there, some of which I’ll be making use of to get my preaching to some acceptable standard, but one that stands out (even amongst printed guides to preaching) is Biblical Preaching.
You could mount a pretty strong case that a Bible and this website are enough to make [...]

Elizabeth and David (Sally’s parents) gave Cordie this Bible for her baptism. It’s easily the best young kids’ Bible I’ve seen, mainly because the Biblical Theology is outrageously clear. Take this for example, from the end of ‘Part 1: A Very Good Beginning’:
So God’s people, Adam and Even, lived in God’s place, the Garden of [...]

Have a look at Faith By Hearing for masses of mp3 sermons and Biblical Preaching for outstanding sermon advice. They’re both excellent sites (and lovely Wordpress blogs). Also check out Re^son and Dan’s blog for great music resources and thoughts.
Another excellent resource I’ve just come across is Theopedia, a thorougly biblical theology wiki. It’s [...]

We’re studying Romans at college this semester, and as part of a suggestion from one of our lecturers, Sally and I are working through sections of the book. We have about 100 verses that we look at closely in class, drawn from all the big points of the letter, 1:16-17, 3:21-26, 5:1-11, 8, 12:1-2 etc [...]

I’ve just discovered in reading Calvin’s Institutes this last weekend that he agrees much more with Henri Blocher that I thought. Blocher wrote a book on original sin and described it as not so much an ‘infection’ that is transmitted from Adam through the generations to us, but as a loss of divine gifts, which [...]

We just read Romans 8:28-39 in chapel, and I noticed something from the Greek that I haven’t seen before. The word that the NIV translates “we are more than conquerers” (yes, it’s just one word!) is actually a verb. It’s a stative verb that means, “to be completely victorious”, which is how the Holman Christian [...]

Rob Forsyth, the Bishop of South Sydney spoke at college chapel this morning. As part of his sermon, which was from 1 Corinthians 1:18 and the following verses, he showed a slide of this famous graffiti, probably dating from the 2nd century.
A little clearer:
The words read
ΑΛΕΞΑΜΕΝΟΣ ΣΕΒΕΤΕ ΘΕΟΝ,
which is (not very good) Greek for [...]
