From this week’s issue.
Cloistered Shame in Israel - details the problems with abuse and secrecy amongst the conservative Orthodox Haredim in Israel.
In Bnei Brak, a predominately Haredi city near Tel Aviv, social worker Doron Agasi says one young Haredi man told him that he had molested more than a hundred girls. Agasi, director of the [...]

Some good stuff in the Herald today.
A criticism of the PM’s nonsensical use of language by Phillip Coorey.
At first, Rudd stunned his assailant with a burst of trademark jibber jabber that was supposed to pass for explanation.
Then the coup de grace: “Now we must cut our cloth to make sure it fits and that applies [...]

This short article from The Economist explains concisely and in straightforward language some suggested reasons why oil prices are so high and why they will probably go much higher.
The Economist is like Time magazine but better. They have the Big Mac Index:
The Economist’s Big Mac index seeks to make exchange-rate theory more digestible. It is [...]

UPDATE: I’ve created a page for helping Burma, with information about how to get money for supplies to those who need it. Please share this link with others who are concerned for those in Burma.
I believe in the sovereignty of nations, under God, and I think invading Iraq was a mistake, chiefly because of the [...]

I love The New Yorker. They produce long articles on all sorts of stuff you’d otherwise know nothing about.
Here’s an article about Pascal Dangin, a bloke with apparently mystical Photoshop ability.
“The people who complain about retouching are the first to say, ‘Get this thing off my arm.’ ” I mentioned the Dove ad campaign that [...]

Wow. Adele Horin is pushing so hard for abortion here, it’s almost satire. I agree with her that teen pregnancy is generally undesirable, but I don’t agree with her solution - get serious about abortion.
… will there ever be a Hollywood artist brave enough to do a romantic comedy about a girl who opts to [...]

Maybe I’m just a bit too cynical, but when a dance producer slams a popular TV dance show (So You Think You Can Dance) a week before her new production opens, a little bell rings.
It’s like a fast-food version of dance…
It’s a reality show; it’s not a dance show. They have those poor kids [...]

Have you ever been scared by something really massive? I remember snorkelling around a large ship one day, I can’t even remember where it was, but it was freaking me out.
Just the huge size of this thing, immobile in the water, as I bobbed up and down next to it. I rapped on the [...]

And today, headlining the SMH site, Jenna Bush calls her father. They engage in small talk.
Honestly. This is the ‘meat’ of the article,
“I’m just sitting here with daddy,” Laura Bush told her daughter, to which DeGeneres chimed in: “Oh hey! It’s Ellen. I wanted to say hi to daddy.”
So the president got on [...]

It’s a sad day for SBS, who look like they’ve lost Mary, at least at this stage. She’s an Amazon among mere mortals. An articulate, multi-lingual Amazon. And a very snappy dresser.
I very much hope she stays on, and that SBS goes back to the excellent news program they used to have: World News [...]
